Biden’s cognitive health, The Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025, Hurricane Beryl, adapting to the new normal of extreme temperatures and its effects on our properties…lions, and tigers, and bears…oh my! It is a right complicated hellscape out there right now. Yes, I have been caught, guilty of doomscrolling once again, and although I haven’t found sufficient answers I’m getting closer to making up my mind about the Biden issue, I absolutely know that Project 2025 is as evil as the devil, and at least Hurricane Beryl brought rain to these parts. Sadly, Beryl reeked havoc in other parts of the state, a harbinger of the temperature and rainfall conditions predicted should Trump become president, I fear. All of this contemplation may hurt our heads and fill us with confusion, but it’s not a bad thing to shake up and challenge our assumptions. However, the one truth I am certain of (I will resort to all caps here so you know I am shouting), WE MUST BEAT TRUMP! WE MUST ELECT A DEMOCRAT!

It was so cool, even in the heat!
Fayette County Democrats (and a few like minded visitors from Bastrop & Travis Cos.) proudly rode through the crowd-packed streets of Round Top for the 174th Annual 4th of July Parade. PLEASE JOIN US: The County Chair of the Fayette County Democratic Party has called, and does hereby notify all Democratic Party Precinct Chairs within Fayette County, of a meeting of the County Executive Committee (CEC) to be held on Thursday, July 11, commencing at 6:00 p.m. at La Grange City Hall, Council Room for the purposes of (1) conducting, prior to the CEC business meeting, an open forum for the public to raise and discuss issues of concern, followed by (2) a CEC business meeting.

Project 2025 is a document created by the right wing conservative think tank called The Heritage Foundation (in conjunction with 100+ other conservative organizations). It is intended as a roadmap for the next Republican president with the intention of facilitating the immediate implementation of a far right agenda. It’s formally known as Mandate for Leadership - The Conservative Promise. Project 2025 Presidential Transition Project. Basically, it is a 900 page plan for the implementation of a far right wish list for this country.

If you have access to Substack I highly recommend Andra Watkins’ How Project 2025 Will Ruin Your Life. There is both a free version as well as a paid subscription. You can subscribe below and unsubscribe just as easily should you wish to do so.
What is in Project 2025?
Short answer, A LOT, but nothing good. It’s a huge multi-pronged document the authors have done their best to wrap in the language of patriotism and “family values”. In actuality it is a heavily White Christian Nationalism influenced work intended to turn the clock back at least 60 years in order to strip women, the LGBTQ+ community and people of color of opportunity and their rights while merging conservative Christian values with governance. And that’s just for starters.
Here are a few of the more egregious examples of this multi-pronged initiative.
● Dramatic increase in the powers of the president and the executive branch.
● Places currently independent agencies such as the Department of Justice under the direct control of the president.
● Reinstating Schedule F, the Trump plan to allow the removal of up to 50,000 federal civil servants in order to replace them with Trump loyalists. (Trump put this in place while in office and Biden undid it almost immediately upon taking office.)
● Dismantling the Department of Education, NOAA and the Environmental Protection Agency along with other federal agencies.
● Restructuring the Department of Energy through a myriad of policies that do everything from slashing funding for grid deployment in an effort to choke out renewable energy deployment and replacing carbon reductions initiatives with support for fossil fuels.
● Scales back federal enforcement of Title IX (funding for girls’/women’s sports).
● Supports “school choice” and “parental rights”, as defined by conservative right wing values. (No parental choice for parents trying to support their transgender children of course.)
● Increases student loan costs and eliminates Biden’s SAVE income driven loan repayment plan, costing college students more and pricing college outside the reach of even more hopeful students.
● The eventual elimination of Title 1 funding which is federal grant money used to support schools with high populations of low income students.
● Increased funding for a border wall on the US-Mexico border.
● Consolidating a number of agencies who deal with different aspects of immigration into one organization with expanded powers and an emphasis on enforcement.
● Internment camps for undocumented immigrants.
● The use of active duty military as well as the National Guard to round up and deport undocumented immigrants.
● An end to legal protections for Dreamers.
● Alarming changes in how the US Census is conducted and the information collected is used to push conservative goals such as redistricting congressional districts and how $2.8 trillion in federal public services money is spent. A portion of the changes would include a citizenship question.
● Slash corporate income tax as well as additional tax cuts for the very wealthy.
● Higher tariffs on imports from China and other countries. (Top economists agree this will cause inflation to soar which will mostly impact the middle class, working class and the poor.)
● Slashing funding for early childhood and K-12 education.
● Supports a nationwide abortion ban, the reinstatement of the Comstock Act of 1873 and limited access to contraception. These are but a few examples of proposed policies aimed at removing women from the workplace and the public arena.
● Eliminating civil rights protections and enforcement.
These examples have been pulled from multiple sources and are only a brief sampling. If implemented, Project 2025 would dramatically alter American life and culture. Keep in mind, this is only the stuff they have been bold enough to say out loud. There’s sure to be more on the far right wish list still to be divulged when they decide the time is right.
